My area of expertise consists of supporting clients that have experienced family enmeshment trauma as this will almost always lead to a lost sense of self and patterns of self-abandonment. In relationships, enmeshment trauma can show up as an anxious or avoidant attachment style and can often involve becoming involved with narcissistic partners. This can re-traumatise the individual and may lead to further destructive life patterns, like shame, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and more.
Family enmeshment trauma develops when family boundaries are blurred, or don't exist at all. It can be difficult to recognise, because from the outside it often looks like intense closeness, love and loyalty and often from the inside too it can feel like a strength rather than something harmful. It's commonly characterised by:
● A lack of emotional boundaries between family members
● Family members sharing near-identical thoughts, feelings and behaviours
● Children lacking autonomy or independence
● Parents making decisions on behalf of their children, even into adulthood
● Parents treating children more like best friends, confidants or partners than
children
Left unaddressed, family enmeshment can lead to a fear of conflict, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, a weak sense of identity, feeling disconnected from yourself and the world, and trauma bonding. Many clients come to me having spent years believing these patterns were simply "how close families are". Part of my work is gently helping you see the difference between closeness and enmeshment, without judgement towards the family members involved.
Your sense of self is your own perception of your unique traits, beliefs and values, including your self-image, self-esteem and belief systems. It's multifaceted, and for many of my clients, it's something that was never given the space to fully form, because so much energy went into managing other people's needs and expectations instead.
The journey to finding yourself is often also a journey of recognising how much you've sacrificed or overlooked in order to keep others close. It can be disorientating at first, and even frightening, to start asking what you actually want, need or believe separate from what's expected of you. This is why in our therapeutic relationship I will ensure you are held safely and given plenty of space and time to process this essential transformation towards being your own true self.
Self-abandonment is the pattern of dismissing, ignoring, suppressing or rejecting your own needs, feelings and boundaries, often out of a perceived need to comfort others, or to earn their approval. It commonly develops in environments where expressing your needs or feelings was met with shame, was ignored, or was punished, creating a deep-rooted fear of rejection and the belief that your safety depends on keeping everyone else happy.
Over time, self-abandonment can become so automatic that it's barely noticed. You might find yourself agreeing to things you don't want to do, staying quiet when something upsets you, or feeling guilty for having needs at all. Part of our work together is learning to notice these moments as they happen, and gradually building the confidence to respond differently.
Narcissism is characterised by an excessive, often inflated focus on the self, alongside a limited capacity for empathy. People with narcissistic traits typically need frequent validation, seeking constant praise and affirmation from those around them, often at the expense of the people closest to them.
If you've grown up around, or been in a relationship with someone with these traits, the impact on your own sense of self can run deep. You may experience self-doubt, chronic guilt, difficulty trusting your own perception of events, and develop a habit of prioritising others' needs above your own. I can help you begin to untangle these patterns, understand what happened, and start to rebuild trust in your own judgement.
Concierge Psychotherapy can be particularly useful when working with enmeshment trauma and family dynamics. This is a bespoke form of support where I spend time with you within that environment, helping you build self-regulation in real time.
This allows me to observe the dynamics at play as they naturally occur, rather than only hearing about them after the fact. I am then able to reflect these observations back to you with insight that isn't always possible from a standard session. Because this service includes my travel, and, where relevant, accommodation, it is offered at a different rate to my standard sessions. Please get in touch to discuss whether this could be right for you and your family.
